Peer-review process

Every research article is assessed by independent experts under double-blind review.

    Submission

    Day 0

    Authors submit online and receive an acknowledgement.

  2. 2

    Editorial check

    Within 7 days

    Scope, formatting and plagiarism screening. Out-of-scope papers are returned quickly.

  3. 3

    Reviewer assignment

    Within 14 days

    A section editor invites at least two independent experts.

  4. 4

    Peer review

    About 21 days

    Double-blind review: authors and reviewers do not know each other's identity.

  5. 5

    Decision

    About 6 weeks

    Accept, minor revision, major revision or reject, with the reviewers' reports.

  6. 6

    Revision

    Up to 60 days

    Authors revise and respond point by point; revised papers may be re-reviewed.

  7. 7

    Publication

    2–4 weeks after acceptance

    Accepted papers are proofed, given a DOI and published open access.

Appeals

Authors may appeal a rejection within 30 days by writing to the editorial office with a reasoned response. Appeals are handled by an editor not involved in the original decision.
